Sabir Mateen - Daniel Carter: Sound on a Sunday
Registrato a Roma nell’aprile del 2004 durante il festival "New York Is Now!", il quinto capitolo della serie curata da Pino Saulo varca i confini nazionali presentando il duo composto da Sabir Mateen e Daniel Carter. Polistrumentisti straordinariamente eclettici e prolifici (per l’occasione si cimentano con un numero impressionante di strumenti: clarinetto, contralto, tenore, flauto, pianoforte, batteria e tromba), i due frequentano la scena free newyorchese da quasi un trentennio, condividendo esperienze e numerosissimi progetti (entrambi sono passati nella fila della “Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra” di William Parker, hanno condiviso la militanza nel quartetto d’assalto “Test” e, di recente, si sono trovati fianco a fianco nel supergruppo “Bindu” allestito da Hamid Drake).

Viste le credenziali poc’anzi esposte, non è difficile immaginare i contorni dei quaranta minuti scarsi proposti dalla coppia: improvvisazione free alla maniera di New York, furente e serrata come esige l’ormai consolidata etichetta. Numerosi i passaggi da segnalare: gli splendidi ed acrobatici svolazzi di Mateen al clarinetto nell’iniziale “Sound on Sunday”; l’incedere tribale di flauto e batteria che caratterizza l’ipnotico srotolarsi di “On the Full Moon”; l’infuocato botta e risposta al tenore che regala alla conclusiva “Never Never Land” un retrogusto decisamente R&B. Non mancano nemmeno i momenti di canto rituale, le urla propiziatorie (a proposito, prestare attenzione ai primi dieci secondi del disco) ed i convulsi recitativi secondo i dettami di Sam Rivers e Cecil Taylor.

Decisamente poco riuscito, invece, il furioso duetto pianoforte-batteria di “Ain’t It the Truth”, in cui è difficile non percepire un fastidioso senso di casualità e di affastellamento.

Nel complesso un documento prezioso e rappresentativo di una coppia di instancabili stakanovisti del free targato New York.
