Stefon Harris: Sonic Creed
A distanza di un decennio dalla pubblicazione di Urbanus -l'ultimo disco di Stefon Harris con l'ensemble Blackout -sono cambiate molte cose nel mondo del vibrafono jazz: nel 2016 è scomparso Bobby Hutcherson, l'anno successivo Gary Burton s'è ritirato dalla scena attiva e Mike Mainieri, che ha superato gli ottant'anni, ha ridotto l'attività. Lo scettro del miglior vibrafonista mainstream è ora in mano ad Harris, che non a caso vince regolarmente i referendum internazionali di pubblico e critica.


In questi anni il vibrafonista di Albany, è stato molto attivo in qualità di sideman e co-leader, incidendo con David Sanchez e Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (Ninety Miles 2011 e 2012), Giovanni Mirabassi (No Way Out, Cam Jazz 2015), Theo Croker (AfroPhysicist OKeh 2014) ed ancora con Diana Krall, Robert Glasper e altri.
Oggi la sua formazione è mutata e ritroviamo solo il sassofonista Casey Benjamin e il batterista Terreon Gully. Non ci son più Marc Cary e Ben Williams (sostituiti da James Francies e Joshua Crumbly) e si aggiungono la chitarra elettrica di (Mike Moreno) e il clarinetto (Felix Peikli). Come allora non mancano gli ospiti, ovviamente tutti diversi (i più noti sono Regina Carter, Pedrito Martinez e la giovane flautista Elena Pinderhughes).



Nel lavoro attuale c'è meno elettronica ed il modern mainstream assume qualche colorazione latina. Dopo un primo, serrato, tributo ai Jazz Messengers con "Dat Dere," il percorso ha un andamento più disteso e cantabile col danzante "Chasin' Kendall" e il lirico "Let's Take A Trip To The Sky." Due composizioni di Harris, dedicate rispettivamente ai due figli e alla moglie, con il leader che si alterna alla marimba. Seguono fantasiose versioni di famosi standard del jazz moderno: un'impronta latina per "The Cape Verdean Blues," una funky per lo shorteriano "Go" e una sottilmente cameristica in "Now," in ricordo diBobby Hutcherson.
Tutto scorre con incisività e partecipazione, toccando i vertici in "Throw It Away" di Abbey Lincoln (superlativo Benjamin al soprano) e nel conclusivo "Gone Too Soon," un lirico confronto tra il vibrafono di Harris e la marimba di Joseph Doubleday.
