Tim Garland: Songs to the North Sky
Noto internazionalmente per la sua collaborazione con Chick Corea, il non ancora cinquantenne polistrumentista inglese Tim Garland presenta in questo doppio CD una fotografia della sua attuale attività creativa, documentando nel primo disco il suo trio Lighthouse e nel secondo la sua suite per trio jazz e orchestra d'archi Songs to the North Sky.

Nelle otto tracce del primo CD i Lighthouse vengono proposti in più formazioni, con tre pianisti diversi e alternativamente il basso elettrico di Kevin Glasgow o le chitarre di Ant Low. La musica è molto dinamica, ma anche poco sorprendente quanto a strutture e ritmi; vi emerge tuttavia la statura strumentistica di Garland, che riunisce sincretisticamente stilemi e sensibilità di alcuni dei grandi riferimenti degli anni Settanta e Ottanta: in primo luogo Michael Brecker quando Garland imbraccia il tenore e Paul McCandless quando passa al soprano, ma qua e là si possono ascoltare misurati riferimenti a Jan Garbarek e al connazionale John Surman. Tutto questo, però, all'interno di una costruzione degli assoli da un lato sempre molto personale, dall'altro davvero raffinata, complessa, tanto ricca di variazioni e invenzioni, quanto priva di ripetizioni nelle frasi. Il disco, pertanto, si ascolta con piacere e tocca in alcune tracce anche momenti di eccellenza -in primis nel brano conclusivo, per soprano solo, davvero toccante liricamente ed espressivamente.

Piuttosto diverso il secondo lavoro, che -come accade sempre a questo genere di accostamenti jazz/classica -probabilmente spaccherà il giudizio degli ascoltatori in due fronti netti, ma che da un lato non manca di qualità tanto progettuali e d'arrangiamento, quanto espressive. Composta da quindici brani che solo in pochi casi raggiungono i quattro minuti, la suite ha intenti descrittivi che in parte realizza muovendosi all'interno di atmosfere evocative, anche se mai sospese e rarefatte. Siamo lontani dal modern jazz di Lighthouse, anche se Garland conserva l'espressività allo strumento, ma la coniuga in modo del tutto diverso, entrando da solista ottimamente in relazione con gli archi e gli arrangiamenti orchestrali -cosa, questa, che riesce perfettamente anche a John Patitucci. Ne scaturisce così un'opera piuttosto originale, godibile e tutt'altro che banale, con momenti davvero splendidi, come la suggestiva ed elaborata "Freedom to Wander."

Globalmente, il doppio album è un eccellente lavoro, certo non esente da limiti ma con i propri aspetti di qualità. Ed è anche un'occasione per apprezzare in contesti assai diversi un artista molto interessante qual è Tim Garland, sia come compositore e arrangiatore, sia -soprattutto -come eccellente strumentista.
