Compiuti i sessanta anni, Fred Hersch ha ormai conseguito la meritata notorietà che però lo ha portato alla sovraesposizione discografica. Questo suo recente progetto è imperniato sulla rielaborazione di un vasto repertorio che include jazz, bossa nova, musica eurocolta, pop. Come era lecito attendersi da un musicista di vaglia come lui, prevale la logica della decostruzione armonico-melodica rispetto alla mera interpretazione didascalica. Paragonato a qualche alterna prova discografica dell'ultimo quinquennio, questo CD brilla per ispirazione e sensibilità artistica.

Ritroviamo nelle sette tracce tutto l'afflato lirico di un musicista colto e raffinato, il cui fraseggio si basa su idee e non su pattern. Soprattutto nella rivisitazione di Jobim, entra in campo uno scavo struggente della melodia originaria che da solo vale l'acquisto del CD. La sua prova in solitudine ci consegna una versione sofisticata della bossa nova, grazie ad una sensibilità post-romantica. Ci sono poi le doti di improvvisatore, che lo portano ad arricchire la melodia di base tra un giro armonico e l'altro. Viene ottenuto così un sontuoso scavo in profondità, fino a scardinare l'aspetto armonico.

Hersch è quindi riuscito nell'intento di far confluire il suo formidabile talento in un progetto che spicca per tensione emotiva e respiro autenticamente poetico. Anche l'avventurosa rilettura degli standard jazzistici suggella la piena riuscita di un disco altamente consigliabile con il quale il pianista statunitense ben sintetizza lo stato dell'arte legato al suo strumento d'elezione.
