The Rory Stuart Quartet: So Rise Up
Non più giovanissimo - Nightwork (Cadence), la sua prima incisione da leader risale al 1982 - il chitarrista newyorchese Rory Stuart presenta in So Rise Up una manciata di nuove composizioni e soprattutto l’affiatato quartetto con il quale si esibisce da qualche anno.

Le composizioni sono solide, formalmente ineccepibili, a tratti armonicamente sofisticate, ma non proprio memorabili e spaziano da un neo bop fresco ed elastico a intrecci ritmici debitori dell’estetica M-Base passando per velate connessioni sudamericane. Fatta eccezione per l’iniziale “Experiment # 2“, brano dalle molteplici sfaccettature, dagli intricati sviluppi armonici, e dalle inaspettate intuizioni ritmiche.

Alla fine ciò che risalta maggiormente sono il suono complessivo del gruppo, un’azzeccata miscela di acustico ed elettrico, e soprattutto le voci dei singoli musicisti. Mark Shim è tenorista dal suono ruvido, abrasivo, che sa essere inaspettatamente caldo e morbido nei tempi lenti e riesce ad inserire nel fraseggio elementi free che lo rendono tra i sassofonisti più riconoscibili della scena nordamericana.

E il suo timbro va a nozze con la sonorità cristallina della chitarra di Stuart, perfetta negli attacchi, essenziale nelle fasi di accompagnamento, rigorosa nei momenti solistiche. Ottima la sezione ritmica formata dal gettonatissimo Matt Penman al basso e dall’ormai affermato Ari Hoenig alla batteria.
