Bruce Cockburn: Slice O'Life
Giunto alla vigilia dei 40 anni di attività, il cantautore canadese Bruce Cockburn pubblica un doppio album registrato dal vivo nel corso del suo tour nordamericano del 2008, primo live della sua vasta discografia realizzato interamente senza l'ausilio di un gruppo di spalla. I brani del repertorio sono tutti già noti, con l'eccezione di "The City Is Hungry," unico inedito, ma sarebbe sbagliato etichettare questa uscita semplicemente come un ulteriore "best of" in aggiunta alle numerose antologie già realizzate.

Il lavoro rappresenta una fetta di vita, come da titolo, per un autore che tanto ha dato, in termini di impegno e dedizione, al mondo della musica (e non solo: ricordiamo anche le sue numerose campagne ambientalistiche e le attività a sostegno dei diritti civili), non sempre ricambiato adeguatamente dal successo di pubblico, pur potendo sempre contare su una schiera di fedelissimi sostenitori.

Il disco è realizzato assemblando brani provenienti da una decina di concerti diversi in una sequenza continua a simulare l'illusione di un concerto unico, includendo anche alcuni monologhi di introduzione alle canzoni e registrazioni tratte dai soundcheck. Cockburn usa qui esclusivamente la chitarra acustica, alternando il fingerpicking delle origini con un accompagnamento ad accordi più tradizionale, aiutandosi occasionalmente con effetti elettronici di eco o delay come su "The End of All Rivers," unico strumentale della raccolta, dove ha modo di sfoggiare la sua perizia tecnica.

Musicalmente, Cockburn si è sempre mosso partendo dalle radici folk arricchite via via di influenze diverse, da quelle jazzistiche più presenti agli inizi a quelle world degli ultimi tempi, senza dimenticare la dimensione rock prevalente negli anni '90, rivelandosi anche un pregevole chitarrista soprattutto sul versante acustico. Nel concerto in solo fatalmente qualcosa di tutto questo bagaglio va perduto; e se il disco non deluderà sicuramente i suoi fan, potrebbe però non rappresentare la migliore introduzione alla sua musica per chi non lo conosce già. Non mancano comunque alcune canzoni memorabili, come l'iniziale "World of Wonders," assieme a classici già affermati del suo repertorio come "Pacing the Cage," "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" o "Wondering Where the Lions Are," in un lavoro che però complessivamente non aggiunge molto di nuovo alla sua già notevole discografia.
