Universal Indians with Joe McPhee: Skullduggery
Un po' di collegamenti e incroci.
Il trio Universal Indians trae il proprio nome dal pezzo di Albert Ayler che chiudeva il disco Love Cry.
Ispirarsi a Ayler -o comunque a quel momento storico e espressivo in cui il sassofonista si trovò a agire, insieme a John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman e soci... -è già un'indicazione programmatica precisa.
Il riferimento poi alla convivenza di globale e particolare del nome è un ulteriore segnale di un'espressività in movimento.

Non potrebbe essere diversamente, dal momento che il sassofonista americano John Dikeman (ultimamente anche con William Parker) è un vero cosmopolita, attualmente di base in Olanda.
E che i suoi compagni di avventura, il bassista Jon Rune Strøm e il batterista Tollef Østvang sono, come si può intuire dai nomi, norvegesi.

Se poi aggiungiamo che "l'ospite d'onore" del trio, in questo concerto registrato a Anversa e ora diventato un ottimo disco, è un musicista cosmopolita e "ayleriano" come Joe McPhee, beh, tutto torna.

Ovviamente, e fortunatamente, dai tempi di Ayler di acqua ne è passata sotto i ponti e i quattro si muovono nel solco di una tradizione improvvisativa che è anche ormai saldamente europea e che dialoga in modo più o meno evidente con altre tensioni espressive della contemporaneità.
Ne esce un flusso a tratti astratto, ma più spesso alimentato da un'energia di grande bellezza, una forza del timbro e del gesto che, pur costretta a un'inerzia quasi inarrestabile, come una palla di metallo fuso che rotola veloce, non dimentica mai di gettare incendiari sguardi d'intesa ai propri compagni di viaggio.

Chi ama questi territori avventurosi e la magia evocativa degli incroci, non resterà deluso.
