Jason Kao Hwang: Sing House
Un gruppo solido, perfettamente amalgamato, dal suono definito e ricco di sfumature, è quanto ci offre in questo album il sessantunenne violinista cino-americano Jason Kao Hwang, figura decisamente trasversale che nell'arco di un'ormai lunga (per quanto fin troppo appartata, verrebbe da dire) carriera ha collaborato con musicisti del calibro di Henry Threadgill e Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith e Butch Morris, William Parker e innumerevoli altri, non disdegnando di prodursi anche in ambito contemporaneo-colto, nella scrittura al servizio dell'immagine, come musicista di studio e didatta.

Di quest'ultimo suo ottimo lavoro, e del gruppo che ce lo propone, colpisce anzitutto il felice contrasto che viene a instaurarsi fra l'arco del leader e il trombone di Steve Swell, a tessere una trama nitida quanto sferica, affermativa, ovviamente in un contesto che non manca di farsi ad intermittenza più aereo e strutturalmente libero, come già l'iniziale "No Such Thing," primo di quattro brani molto omogenei che svariano dagli undici ai quattordici minuti, ci mostra con chiarezza.

Il resto rinforza questa prima felicissima impressione, di pienezza e perfetto equilibrio formale e strutturale, timbrico e dinamico, in seno a un gruppo che si riconferma a ogni nuovo episodio (tutti sono a firma di Hwang) esattamente come tale: un'efficientissima macchina il cui assemblaggio genera brillantezza e freschezza e mai, di contro, prevedibilità o ripiegamenti su soluzioni di comodo. Una gran bella scoperta, insomma.
