Nata dall'incontro tra il pianista statunitense Michael Jefry Stevens e tre musicisti svizzeri, questa formazione presenta il suo secondo lavoro, dopo il debutto di Moving Stills (Unit Records).

Quel disco pubblicava con qualche anno di ritardo una session del 2004 e la stessa cosa accade oggi per questo Shifting Moods, registrato dal vivo il 26 ottobre 2007 al Moods Jazz Club di Zurigo.

L'estetica del quartetto non è mutata: i brani sono libere improvvisazioni o, per meglio dire, improvvisazioni istantanee che si sviluppano con tale coerenza da sembrare composizioni scritte, almeno nelle linee guida. Un'esplorazione delle forme basata sull'attento ascolto reciproco, su un interplay raro (vista l'abituale distanza geogratica che separa Jefry Stevens dai tre colleghi svizzeri), che ha il merito di condurre ad una musica tanto strutturalmente aperta quanto minuziosa nella ricerca melodica e nella calibratura delle dinamiche.

Michael Jefry Stevens non ha bisogno di presentazioni mentre i tre svizzeri sono un po' meno noti al pubblico italiano: il co-leader del quartetto, Jürg Solothurnmann, è un sassofonista versatile e di lunga esperienza (è nato nel 1943) che ha spaziato dal modern mainstream a sintesi col folklore, e attualmente opera nel September Winds di Evan Parker.

Più giovani d'età, sia Studer che Ulrich hanno una lunga esperienza nell'ambito del jazz contemporaneo: il bassista ha collaborato con Lester Bowie, Steve Grossman, Antonello Salis, Mike Melillo e molti altri mentre il batterista appare in oltre quaranta CD con artisti come Urs Blöchlinger, Tom Varner e Vinny Golia.

Tornando al disco ogni brano ha la sua identità in una gamma che spazia tra improvvisazioni radicali, episodi post coltraniani ("From Above - Very Spring") e altri d'astratto lirismo, che debbono molto al visionario mondo poetico di Jefry Stevens.

Ricordiamo in particolare il cameristico "Color Deep," costruito sulla raffinate armonizzazioni del pianista nei primi minuti del brano.
