Trevor Anderies: Shades of Truth

Il batterista Trevor Anderies guida in questo album dagli esiti alquanto eterogenei quello che nominalmente risulterebbe un ottetto, in realtà scorporato generalmente in tronconi (o sottoinsiemi) di varia conformazione (e connotazione) su cui peraltro imperversa, salvo rare eccezioni, la voce baritonale, fra il lirico-leggero, l'epico e il confidenziale (almeno tentato), di Dwight Trible, vero anello debole del lavoro.

Quando Trible tace, in effetti (come nell'iniziale "Attainment," che alimenta di conseguenza attese poi per lo più disattese, o nelle sezioni strumentali dei vari pezzi, specie in "Lenny," che include segmenti di umore lirico-contemporaneo notevoli), tutto sembra funzionare decorosamente, anche se rari sono i colpi di genio, mentre quando la voce occupa il centro della scena il livello cade a picco, incamminandosi lungo sentieri che gli strumentali neppure lascerebbero supporre.

Detto della nota dolente dell'incisione, sottolineiamo come siano invece il sax tenore di Jonathan Armstrong e il clarone di Brian Walsh gli elementi migliori dell'organico, mentre lo stesso Anderies autore, liberato dalle ubbie vocal-teatrali di cui sopra, possiederebbe risorse sufficienti per dire più che dignitosamente la propria, anche con qualche tratto personale.
