Bill Brovold, Jamie Saft: Serenity Knolls

Noto ai più come fenomenale organista e pianista della scena newyorchese più sperimentale nei progetti di John Zorn e Joe Morris, Jamie Saft è in realtà anche un chitarrista (e slidista) che non ti aspetti. Cresciuto a pane, Bob Dylan e Paul Bley, Saft non è nuovo a puntate lontano dagli ottantotto tasti, basti pensare a Breadcrumb Sins o Sunshine Seas, in cui il musicista del Queens fa praticamente tutto da solo, alternandosi alla chitarra e al basso, alla slide e alla steel guitar.

Compagno scelto per questa avventura che va sotto il nome di Serenity Knolls è Bill Brovold, asso della Guild e testa dietro i Larval di Detroit, band post-rock attiva dal 1996 e nel roster della Cuneiform Records. Un bel viaggio nelle praterie americane "sulla pista del bisonte" (grande e americano, a questo giro), tra spruzzate di psichedelia, naturalmente John Fahey (e chi se no?) e un bel po' di ambient. Scorre benissimo Serenity Knolls, dall'incedere fluido e soave: è curioso pensare quanto questo lavoro sia in contrapposizione alla furia e alla follia di alcuni tra i progetti dei due titolari, la maggior parte delle volte indaffarati a tradurre in musica la caotica frenesia della metropoli. Qui no, sembrano a proprio agio, anzi: sembra che abbiano fatto sempre questo.
