Il chitarrista, compositore e band leader newyorkese Tom Guarna è un musicista che pur muovendosi in un ambito mainstream garantisce alla sua musica tratti di assoluta riconoscibilità. Il timbro del suo strumento elettrico è tarato su frequenze jazz-rock e post-fusion, anche se l'elemento dominante risulta essere una sintassi espressiva di stampo post boppistico.
Un brano come "Movement and Repose" -ad esempio—nonostante la ricchezza delle accentuazioni rielabora una serie di concetti che rimandano al virtuosismo di Allan Holdsworth.

In Rush vengono affrontati pertinentemente varie declinazioni mainstream: pregevole è "Elegy for Etan (Dedicated to Etan Patz)," una ballad dal sapore tradizionale caratterizzata da un'introduzione di chitarra a blocchi accordali ricca di respiri, silenzi e momenti meditativi, crescendi e diminuendi, che lasciano spazio ad un assolo ispirato e ben sorretto dal gruppo (soprattutto dall'uso preciso ed elegante dei piatti di Johnathan Blake); cantabile e affabile è il tema di "Forgivennes" che, seppur nei soli tende a complicarsi e ad assumere connotati decisamente forti, risulta nell'insieme garbato; convenzionale—ma non banale—è invece il medium swing "Dreamland," in cui l'alternanza solistica tra chitarra e sassofono tenore produce un effetto piacevole anche grazie all'uso di frasi leggere e disimpegnate.
Delle quattro rimanenti tracce, tre si distinguono per essere particolarmente intricate, veloci, elaborate, puntigliose nella scansione delle note quanto potenti nell'esporre dinamicamente concetti tecnicamente complessi.
Onestamente se nel disco non fosse stato incluso "High Plains" non ne avremmo sentito la mancanza. Sia il tema che il suo sviluppo appaiono decisamente di maniera: non aggiungono né tolgono nulla all'intero progetto.

Nonostante tutto si muova all'interno di un impianto linguistico ampiamente riconoscibile, Rush si fa apprezzare per la precisione esecutiva, per la scioltezza con cui vengono esposti i temi (spesso molto complicati), per il modo in cui gli stessi vengono valorizzati e sostenuti adeguatamente dalla sezione ritmica, per la pulizia del sound e per quella magistrale leggerezza che permea l'intero lavoro e che si basa sull'idea di riformulare in modo più o meno originale l'ordinario musicale jazzistico.
