David Redmond: Roots

Il sodalizio tra David Redmond, Jason Rigby, Bill Carrothers e Kevin Brady dura da alcuni anni. Accade spesso che nei dischi firmati da uno dei componenti del quartetto, gli altri tre compaiano come sidemen. In questo caso è il bassista David Redmond ad assumere le vesti del leader ed a far uscire, per Fresh Sound/New Talent, un lavoro che, a sintetizzarlo in un aggettivo, quello che dà il nome all'etichetta andrebbe benissimo. È la freschezza, infatti, il tratto dominante di questo Roots: una freschezza non tanto da intendere come levità delle composizioni, che anzi sono articolate, tutte quante, senza per questo risultare appesantite, quanto piuttosto come leggerezza dell'esecuzione, come capacità dei quattro musicisti di rimanere rilassati anche negli episodi più pirotecnici.

Vale la pena di fare un esempio, significativo del modo in cui, anche dal punto di vista della produzione e del missaggio, David Redmond ha deciso di impostare questo lavoro. Nella traccia "Vertigo," la seconda del disco, c'è un solo di tenore: è pieno di note, però è registrato ad un volume un poco più basso rispetto alla ritmica. L'effetto è lievemente straniante, ma restituisce l'impressione di una totale assenza di sforzo.

Si diceva delle composizioni: i temi complessi e mediamente lunghi di questi brani sono pensati in un contesto armonico logico, consequenziale, quasi senza salti apparenti. In realtà le acrobazie tonali ci sono, ben lungi dall'essere esibite. Nella traccia d'apertura, il medium tempo "Serpentine," questo gioco di sottintesi e nascondimenti dà ottima prova della sua riuscita.

C'è poi, notevole nella sua essenzialità, una composizione divisa in due parti, dal titolo "Missing Man": sono due brevi movimenti dal sapore cameristico, suonati dalla sezione ritmica, senza il sax. Sono episodi completamente statici, nel tempo, nelle dinamiche e nell'armonia, ma di impatto ed espressività elevatissimi.
