Graham Dechter: Right on Time
Ad ascoltare un disco come questo viene in mente che, nonostante la globalizzazione e i fake book esportati in tutto il mondo, negli il jazz mainstream targato USA abbia sempre qualcosa di speciale. Saranno i produttori che scoprono i talenti, le scuole molto professionali, l'interesse del pubblico oppure semplicemente l'aria. Fatto sta che un disco come questo difficilmente spunta in Europa.

Graham Dechter è un giovane - 23 anni - chitarrista di Los Angeles che si dedica agli standard che vanno per la maggiore. C'è chi si dedica alla composizione e chi, come lui, decide di utilizzare gli standard come piattaforma di lancio per improvvisazioni fatte con intelligenza, spingendo poco sull'accelleratore del tempo di esecuzione.

Dechter ha una notevole preparazione e sa usare bene quello che il suo strumento gli mette a disposizione, mettendo in evidenza una maturità sorprendente. Suono, armonia, velocità esecutiva, fantasia, scelta dei brani, non c'è nessun campo in cui gli si possano trovare debolezze. E la ritmica scelta non è da meno, intepretando alla perfezione brani piuttosto noti e su cui c'è poco da aggiungere, se non che sono fatti mettendoci quello che ci si aspetta dal genere: passione e voglia di suonare.

Per il resto si può solo dire che in un settore piuttosto affollato il quartetto sa distinguersi e fa notare come, nonostante tutto, questo tipo di musica abbia le radici negli States. Non solo per la perfezione esecutiva, ma anche per il tipo di feeling trasmesso e la capacità di tirare fuori qualcosa di proprio dagli standard eseguiti.
