Kermit Driscoll: Reveille
"Boomstatz" con il suo andamento indolente e groovy, non avrebbe sfigurato, tutt'altro, in "Paris, Texas" di Wim Wenders. "Ire," dall'atmosfera misteriosa e a tratti impenetrabile sarebbe un perfetto commento sonoro agli incubi e alle ossessioni dei film di David Cronenberg. Una grande versione di "Great Expectations" sembra farci rivivere una qualche marachella combinata dai fratelli Jack ed Elwood Blues (ah, quel giro di basso), nella Chicago ricreata da John Landis. Queste sono solo alcune delle suggestioni che Reveille suscita ascolto dopo ascolto, ma c'è molto altro nell'album di debutto di Kermit Driscoll.

Sì, perché di debutto da leader, all'età di cinquantacinque anni, dopo essere stato figura fondamentale nella Nouvelle Vague newyorchese - con Bill Frisell nel periodo 1987/1996, con John Zorn tra il 1988 e il 1994,- si tratta. Una delle tante bizzarrie che da sempre contraddistinguono e hanno talvolta fatto l'epopea della galassia indefinita chiamata jazz. A onor del vero non tutte le composizioni di Driscoll sono memorabili, ma possiedono comunque humus sufficiente per esaltare le doti interpretative del quartetto. Che si muove con grande disinvoltura su di un terreno non troppo accidentato ma non privo di fascino.

Bill Frisell è l'indiscussa star della session, e non poteva essere altrimenti. La sua chitarra è illuminata come sempre, perfetta nell'interpretare al meglio i diversi umori delle composizioni, sulle quali Frisell lascia il suo marchio discreto ma indelebile. Vinnie Colaiuta è instancabile motore sorprendentemente leggero e misurato. Kris Davis, pianista che si sta facendo un nome sulla scena creativa newyorchese, è colpevolmente sottoutilizzata, ma nei brani in cui trova adeguato spazio riesce a creare, sia al piano che al piano preparato, scenari davvero interessanti.
