Hanno sdoganto il jazz rock per portarlo verso la fusion. In poco tempo si sono imposti come i pilastri di una premiata ditta di session man di assoluto valore. Hanno girato in lungo e in largo tutti i migliori studi di registrazione per dare il loro contributo ai più blasonati artisti.

Negli anni '70 hanno arruolato gente del calibro di David Sanborn, Don Grolnick, Will Lee, George Duke e si sono imposti come un duo delle meraviglie che attraverso una raffinata e complessa idea melodico-armonico-ritmica sono riusciti a far confluire l'improvvisazione, la tecnica e il gusto per il pop verso lidi mai prima toccati.

Hanno suonato di tutto e di più e con tutti. Tra il 1975 e il 1982 i Brecker Brothers hanno prodotto dischi importanti (Back to Back) e fatto tournée estenuanti. Forse non avevano neanche un granché da dire di più e si sciolsero.

La Grp di Dave Grusin garantì loro nel 1992 una nuova chance con Return of the Brecker Brothers. Loro non rifiutarono. Chiamarono a raccolta i soliti e insoliti noti (Dennis Chambers e George Whitty alle tastiere, il bassista James Genus, i chitarristi Dean Brown e Michael Stern, il percussionista Don Alias, il sassofonista David Sanborn e il bassista Will Lee) e continuarono da dove avevano lasciato.

Il CD è un'istantanea del periodo, ma anche del loro ormai definito marchio di fabbrica. Estetica jazz-rock, formato canzone, tecnicismo, elettronica ("Song for Barry," "King of the Lobby," "Above & Below," "Spherical"): di tutto e di più in un disco che segna un po' il tempo, ma che rimane come testimonianza indelebile di una praticità musicale senza eguali.
