Throttle Elevator Music: Retrospective
Una delle figure più dirompenti (e popolari) del jazz del nostro tempo, Kamasi Washington, ed Erik Jekabson, Thomas McCree, Ava Mendoza, Gregory Howe e Matt Montgomery sono i protagonisti di Retrospective, album che—sebbene uscito nel 2017—poggia le sue radici a cavallo del tempo di due sessioni: la prima tenutasi nel 2011, la seconda nel 2016, entrambe ai Fantasy Studios di Berkeley.

Il progetto Throttle Elevator Music, la cui paternità è da ascrivere al produttore e musicista Gregory Howe, vede in Retrospective il quinto capitolo di un percorso iniziato nel 2012 con un album omonimo e poi proseguito con Area J, Jagged Rocks, e IV. Identificati fin dal loro esordio come una formazione che prova a declinare il rock (secondo alcuni addirittura il punk alla The Clash) in ogni versione del jazz possibile e immaginabile, Throttle Elevator Music con questo nuovo passo in avanti si lasciano alle spalle eventuali etichette, mantenendo saldo da un lato il legame con un certo modo di intendere e di suonare che effettivamente avvicina al formazione al rock, posizionando però Retrospective in quella "terra di nessuno" che il più delle volte offre i migliori frutti artisticamente parlando.

Ed è infatti proprio questa l'idea che si ricava ascoltando le nove composizioni che, con ”Liminality”, assegnano a Washington il compito di tracciare un ingresso lento e meditabondo, confermato dalla languida ”Playing the Alleyway” e poi dalla climatica ”February Drift”. E il rock? Il rock arriva con ”Flux and Solder”: un colpo a bruciapelo con la batteria di McCree a velocizzare il passo e la chitarra di Mendoza a dialogare vorticosamente con il sax di Washington. L'omonimo ”Retrospective” ci riporta dalle parti più liriche di Kamasi, mentre le cinque composizioni poste a chiusura dell'album ribadiscono la vena rock (punk soprattutto con ”Rapid Rotation”) che per anni ha rappresentato il marchio distintivo di Throttle Elevator Music.
