Chris Washburne: Rags And Roots
Dopo l'intrigante rilettura latina di alcuni classici del rock (Low Ridin', Zoho 2015) il trombonista Chris Washburne rilegge la musica afroamericana degli esordi, prendendo in considerazione il ragtime e il jazz di New Orleans. Washburne non è solo un trombonista e un multistrumentista ma un etnomusicologo laureatosi prima al New England Conservatory e poi alla Columbia University (dove oggi insegna). Da anni è un apprezzato autore di saggi e articoli sul jazz e la musica latina.

Per questo lavoro ha riunito un medio organico con eccellenti partner per una rilettura di quel repertorio ampliata al bacino caraibico. Washburne interpreta alcuni classici dell'epoca trasfigurandoli con elementi stilisticamente diversi ma geograficamente vicini, per sottolinearne l'unicità di fondo, la partecipazione allo stesso patrimonio musicale. È una tesi ampiamente dimostrata nei testi di etnomusicologia che il trombonista traduce in un'opera di reinvenzione fantasiosa.

Un brano come "St. Louis Blues" assume quindi una seducente veste latina fino a diventare tutt'uno con "The Peanut Vendor," il celebre tema cubano composto da Moisés Simons. Non scandalizzatevi. Può sembrare un'operazione azzardata ma in definitiva funziona e la musica scorre con gioiosa leggerezza grazie ai felici arrangiamenti del leader e agli interventi dei partner.

Tra le reinterpretazioni spiccano i temi di Scott Joplin, tra cui il classico "Maple Leaf Rag": il suo tema base viene trasfigurato nell'introduzione e si sviluppa in una multiforme sequenza dove coesistono dixieland e modale. Altre felici interpretazioni trasversali sono "Bamboula" di Gottschalk che viene diviso in due parti: una bandistica e carnevalesca ed una latina con assoli di clarinetto e trombone. Ed ancora il cantabile "Lisette," basato su un tema folk haitiano di fine Settecento.
