Rufus Reid: Quiet Pride

Malgrado lo si possa considerare un virtuoso del proprio strumento, Rufus Reid non è mai stato sotto l'occhio dei riflettori. Ispirato all'opera della scultrice Elisabeth Catlett, questo suo CD ne mette in mostra tutto il suo poliforme talento. A conti fatti, quest'opera è la prova discografica più ambiziosa e convincente di Reid, dove l'intensità della musica si mantiene costantemente ad un livello elevato.

Sia dal punto di vista compositivo che dell'arrangiamento, emerge un brillante impasto testurale volto a contrapporre i timbri come sezioni orchestrali. La cura pregevole con cui il leader guida i 20 elementi della big band si percepisce anche dall'incastro della voce all'interno delle sezioni dei fiati come linea aggiuntiva e non come mero contraltare in alternanza. Ma forse l'elemento di maggiore originalità del progetto risiede in una peculiare scelta timbrica del sound orchestrale, volta a far risuonare due corni corni inglesi e voce.

Grazie anche ai brillanti interventi solistici, le strategie d'arrangiamento messe in campo tendono ad eludere cliché e ripetività. Va evidenziato nei quattro movimenti della suite un consapevole interesse per inedite relazioni ritmiche e timbriche, che fanno di Quiet Pride uno dei CD jazz di maggior interesse dell'anno in corso.
