Deve essere difficile per i jazzisti di oggi essere originali. Tirare fuori qualcosa di nuovo da standard e composizioni originali è impresa ardua, ma Frank Kimbrough ci è riuscito con questo Quartet, CD che già dal titolo mette sotto i riflettori un eccellente gruppo che non si accontenta di riprodurre gli stilemi consolidati. La classica formula del quartetto non deve ingannare, o lasciar presagire ombre di dejà vu.

L'alto livello della musica suonata è contraddistinto dai cambi di direzione dettati da una ariosa ambiguità armonica. Rispetto alle prove in trio, il leader dispiega una eccellente capacità di scrittura che tende a lasciar ampio spazio alle incisive trame del sassofono. Funziona a meraviglia anche l'interplay nello scambio fra parti solistiche e la ritmica agile e frastagliata.

Nel suo libero fluire tra swing, gospel e funky, il pianismo del leader giganteggia per il tocco squisito ed il fraseggio di ampio respiro melodico. Eccellente anche la prova di Steve Wilson, per il modo tutto personale di impregnare il clima di ogni brano. Formata quasi interamente da composizioni originali, la tracklist è contrassegnata da alcuni riferimenti ben precisi: fitta trama ritmica, libero confronto collettivo, l'estro smagliante del piglio solistico. Kimbrough si impone ancora una volta sia come pregevole pianista che come compositore prolifico e originale.

Difficilmente ci si imbatte oggi in proposte come questa in esame, caratterizzata da una trascinante forza espressiva e profondità di pensiero.
