Un solido post-bop proposto da un quartetto di conformazione che più classica di così non si potrebbe è quanto ci offre questo CD, la cui specificità primaria risiederebbe pure nel fatto che il materiale tematico è desunto da alcune delle più celebri arie del compositore lucchese (novant'anni esatti dalla sua morte il 29 novembre 2014, fra parentesi) arrangiate da Marcello Tonolo.

In realtà, come fin troppo spesso accade in questi casi, l'omaggiato è un pretesto o poco più, perché poi la fase improvvisativa—soverchiante, non foss'altro che per ragioni meramente temporali—si muove lungo direttrici che più jazzistico- rispettose di così, anche qui, non si potrebbe.

Promettente l'avvio (da Manon Lescaut), in particolare nell'elegante archettato di Santaniello, ma ben presto tutto s'impantana nella consueta trappola del maistream più canonico e prevedibile. Condotto con la massima abilità e pertinenza, per carità, ma l'originalità viaggia su tutt'altre traiettorie. Con Puccini a farle amabile compagnia.
