Realizzato nel 1987 Stephane Grappelli plays Jerome Kern è uno di quei dischi che mette d'accordo tutti gli amanti della buona musica, al di là dei generi e delle preferenze personali. Il jazz c'è, anche se rimane sullo sfondo e si manifesta in uno swing sospeso, intrinseco, ma ci sono anche movimenti collettivi che rimandano all'idea di classicismo.

In scaletta undici brani registrati agli Olympic Sound Studios di Londra, presi dal repertorio del compositore statunitense Jerome Kern, suonati dal monumentale violinista insieme con l'Orchestra diretta da Ettore Stratta. Tra essi evergreen come "All the Things You Are," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" o "Pick Yourself Up," capaci di coinvolgere grazie alla bellezza delle melodie, alle qualità straordinarie degli interpreti e dall'ulteriore spessore emotivo rilasciato dal suono degli archi. Un insieme di grande fascino, nel quale oltre al violino di Grappelli, spesso in primo piano, si fanno notare le chitarre di Marc Fossett e Martin Taylor, pronti nel raddoppiare melodie e sensazioni di profonda eleganza.

Ogni passaggio beneficia di un grande lavoro in fase di arrangiamento e di una pressoché perfetta stretegia esecutiva. Negli ascolti successivi emergono le raffinate tessiture ritmiche, gli intrecci sottintesi, le mille sfumature che insieme formano una figura dal forte appeal. È gradito l'abito da sera.
