Con un cognome così e un’espressione così, Viktoria Tolstoy sembra avere già le carte in regola per imporsi al grande pubblico. Sei dischi alle spalle, altrettanti attestati di stima e di vendite e un costante e continuo struscio con la gente che conta: Esbjörn Svensson le ha prodotto White Russian (primo disco svedese Blue Note) e ha anche scritto un intero CD (Shining on You).

Dopo il viaggio di folk - jazz svedese My Swedish Heart in compagnia del repertorio di Lars Gullin, Börje Fredriksson, Jan Johansson, l’artista svedese, voce levigata come il ghiaccio, ritorna con un nuovo CD (jazz o non jazz) in cui rilegge con creatività un non indimenticabile Prince (“Te Amo Corazon”); ingentilisce ancora di più il genio di Stevie Wonder (“Can’t Help It”), minimizza le asperità stilistiche di Peter Gabriel (“Kiss that Frog”); coverizza con dignità anche altri musicisti di stazza (Van Morrisson, Paul Simon) e ha il tempo di farci conoscere un paio di inediti (“South” e la notevole “Absent”).

Forse è proprio sulla capacità di presentare un proprio repertorio che si misureranno le possibilità future di questa svedese trentaduenne dalle ascendenze da far tremare i polsi.
