Mharlyn Merritt

Mharlyn Merritt is a vocalist with roots in Jazz, R&B and Classic Soul who has lived in London and New York and now creates music, novels and poems in her hometown of Philadelphia, PA.

Daughter of world-renowned Jazz bassist/composer, Jymie Merritt (Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie), Mharlyn Merritt is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fellowship in Jazz Performance and an Interdisciplinary Arts Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. With the band Messenger, led by guitarist/composer Richard Lee Steacker (Grover Washington Band), Mharlyn opened for Hugh Masakela, Eddie Palmieri, and Richard Beltzer among others. During the disco-era her voice graced the background of numerous sessions at Philly’s legendary Sigma Sound Studios.

Beatriz Malnic, Brazilian-American vocalist, vocal arranger, classical pianist and Director of Brazilian Voices arrived in the United States in 1996. Beatriz is a highly respected interpreter of Bossa Nova and Samba and has performed and recorded with musical luminaries such as Al Di Meola, Nestor Torres, Toquinho, Chico Buarque, Roberto Menescal, Duduka da Fonseca, Romero Lubambo, jazz pianists Mike Renzi and Mike Orta, saxophonist Harry Allen, bassist Don Wilner and many others. Beatriz received the Brazilian Press Awards as the Best Brazilian Singer Living in the U.S. in 2009 and 2017. Like all life long musicians it seems that I never really decided to become a musician, but that the decision was natural, and therefore automatic. I simply had to do it. We had a baby grand when I was a toddler and I'd crawl up on the bench and make what I thought was wonderful music for hours at a time. I'm pretty sure that singing was the medium through which I pictured myself communicating musically, and that too seemed to be automatic. With over 15 years of performance experience, a former member of the local R&B sensation Suite 215 a credited co-writer on her first collaborative LP 4 Love Affairs, Honest Intentions (2009).
