Brad Turner

"It's That Time" is the Brad Turner Quartet's first release on Cellar Live Records; although Brad has performed as a sideman on many of the releases on this label, this is his first as a leader. A live recording, this record captures the quartet at it's best - having played together for eighteen years now, the group has developed a level of musical empathy rarely heard in modern mainstream jazz today. Brad Turner's phenomenal talents as a trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer make him one of Canada§s most-in- demand musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler, Michael Moore, Reneé Rosnes, Achim Kaufmann, John Scofield, Ingrid Jensen, Dylan van der Schyff, Mike Murley, Mark Helias, Charles McPherson and Gary Bartz

Atley King: Unconditional

Read "Unconditional" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Unconditional is the debut recording as leader by Atley King who is described in a press release as “Canada's leading young jazz vibraphonist." While that portrayal may or may not be true--not to mention gratuitous--King is very good, as are the members of his admirable quintet. Besides playing splendidly, King wrote the first ...

Cory Weeds: Home Cookin'

Read "Home Cookin'" reviewed by Jack Bowers

On Home Cookin', his second recording with an eleven-piece “little big band," tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds is doing the best he can. Really. As Weeds writes in the liner notes, the plan was to rehearse the band for two nights at Frankie's Jazz Club in Vancouver, Canada, home to Weeds and most of the band's personnel, ...

Polished not Smooth

Read "Polished not Smooth" reviewed by Patrick Burnette

We all know “smooth jazz" is a forbidden genre among hard-core jazzbos, but sometimes you run across albums that have no interest in pandering to the listener, but also don't display any rough edges or dirty elbows. Call it “polished," “refined," “plush," or “mellow"--but don't file it next to Kenny G--or Albert Ayler, for that matter.

Brad Turner Quintet: The Magnificent

Read "The Magnificent" reviewed by Jack Bowers

If the title of Canadian trumpeter Brad Turner's latest album, The Magnificent, sounds a trifle self-absorbed, rest assured it does not refer to him but to another “magnificent" horn player, the late Thad Jones. The honorific, however, would not be unwisely used if applied to Turner himself, who not only excels on the trumpet but also ...

Live? From the Village Vanguard

Read "Live? From the Village Vanguard" reviewed by Patrick Burnette

There are many storied jazz venues, but for a great recorded legacy, none quite matches the Village Vanguard. So many epochal improvised moments put to tape! So many clinking wine glasses captured for eternity! Such a matchless, smoky atmosphere of creation in the heat of the moment! (Insert record scratch here.) The boys don't look at ...
