Musician

Nik Turner

Born:

Nik Turner is perhaps best known as the founding saxophone and flute player for pioneering "space rock" band Hawkwind. As well as contributing to the profound influence that this band has had on rock and punk with its focus on community and grassroots movements -- including its many benefit shows and long-standing support of England's free festivals, Turner may also be the first saxophonist to effectively bring free jazz to rock music. Independent of his work with Hawkwind, Turner has an extensive performance history with his own bands such as Sphynx, Inner City Unit, and Space Ritual, and has perfomed and recorded with such artists as Farflung, the Stranglers, and Sting.

Nik Turner and Youth: Pharaohs From Outer Space

Read "Pharaohs From Outer Space" reviewed by Chris May

Pharaohs From Outer Space is one of three albums launching British experimental / ambient label Painted Word. The label has been formed by post-punk band Killing Joke's bassist Youth, who describes the album--which he produced and co-headlines with Nik Turner, saxophonist with psychedelic space-rockers Hawkind--as “a nod to Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane." The British reedman, vocalist, and former member of the legendary space rock band Hawkwind navigates the cosmos once again. For some, Life in Space may equate to solitude and awe, but Nik Turner's festive approach may be more conducive to joyriding on Comets. Indeed, the artist's vocals take on an air of innocence, often mixed evenly ...

Nik Turner: Space Gypsy

Read "Space Gypsy" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Nik Turner (woodwinds, vocals) was a member of the seminal British space-rock band, Hawkwind. Here, he rekindles the days of yore with a splendid new offering that proffers a fresh perspective. To a certain extent, Space Gypsy generates a contrast of how current and perhaps cleaner digital technology contrasts the warmer, full-bodied sound of analog, when ...
