Melissa Aldana: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by Friedrich Kunzmann

Compositional and instrumental virtuosity always walks along a razor's edge between self-indulgence and purposeful accomplishment. On Visions, sought after saxophonist Melissa Aldana proves that she doesn't only master balancing this edge but that she can also go beyond the complexities of structure, scales and improvisation and naturally create her very own musical aesthetic. In interplay with ...

Nicolas Bearde: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Vocalist Nicolas Bearde has carved out a comfortable niche in the soul-meets-jazz area of the music world. His previous albums--Crossing The Line (Right Groove Records, 2003), All About Love (Right Groove Records, 2004) and Live at Yoshi's--a Salute to Lou (Right Groove Records, 2008)--showcase his songwriting and suave delivery while also pointing toward those who've inspired ...

Nicolas Bearde: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by Chris Mosey

First the good news: Nicolas Bearde, former back-up singer with Bobby McFerrin, is blessed with a deep, dark, romantic voice reminiscent of Lou Rawls and on this album, which seeks to blend soul with jazz, he is backed by some of the best studio musicians on the West Coast.

Now the bad news: ...

Bebo Ferra - Rosario Bonaccorso - Fabrizio Sferra: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

“Ninna nanna per Lele“ ha il pacato respiro di certi lavori di Bill Frisell, con la chitarra elettrica di Bebo Ferra che ci accompagna in un mondo di dolcezze, di sogni e di fanciullesca innocenza. Suoni elettronici e sincopi ritmiche proiettano “My English Brother” in una dimensione metropolitana, riflessi acidi e fluorescenti che sembrano proiettati da una lente ...

Messiaen – Shutz – Kurtag: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Mark Isaacs: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by Ken Kase

Mark Isaacs, whose impressive resume includes associations with jazz greats such as Kenny Wheeler and Roy Haynes, as well as extensive forays into classical performance and composition, presents quite a puzzler with Visions. While it's certainly refreshing to see a capable musician take on popular tunes written after 1960, the album ultimately yields mixed results.

Mark Isaacs: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by John Kelman

Some people insist that contemporary music offers little grist for the imagination, but increasing numbers of jazz artists are proving that's simply not so. From Brad Mehldau to Dave Douglas and Herbie Hancock, new takes on material by artists as diverse as Radiohead, Nick Drake and BjÃrk are becoming an everyday occurrence.

Add Australian-based Mark Isaacs ...

Leonard/Skrowaczewski/Zappa: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

Hark gentle reader, and gather around for a lesson in history. The team of Mark Leonard, Nick Skrowaczewski and Stanley Jason Zappa studied under Bill Dixon, played in his band, and recorded on his label after Dixon heard the first five tracks from what would become Visions. Knowing that these five songs were not enough for ...

Leo Gandleman: Visions

Read "Visions" reviewed by AAJ Staff

This is yet another discovery of mine from that great syndicated show in the USA called the ' Sounds of Brazil '. Like so many of my recent reviews this album contained another ' stop you in your tracks ' cut in the wonderful album opener ' Visons ' featuring Leo on alto sax and keyboards, ...
