Alban Darche

Born:

Album after album, through an ever increasing number of line-ups and experiences, Alban Darche has been building a highly original, free-spirited and coherent body of work. He's the ingenious leader of the AD3 trio (with bassist Frédéric Chiffoleau and drummer Emmanuel Birault) and of Gros Cube (formerly Le Cube), a 15-strong big band featuring the finest jazz talents in the country, with several albums to its name, the latest dating from 2007 and featuring vocalist Katerine. In addition to his personal projects, Alban Darche is also a member of Jean-Louis Pommier's Qüntêt and Fred Pallem's Sacre du Tympan, and has worked with, amongst others, Gabor Gado, Tim Berne, Marc Ducret, Julien Lourau, Kenny Wheeler, Driss El Maloumi, Baptiste Trotignon and André Minvielle

Samuel Blaser: As the Sea

Read "Samuel Blaser: As the Sea" reviewed by John Kelman

Plenty has been written about musical camaraderie--the building of long-term musical relationships and their unmistakable impact on the evolution of a group. Few, however, discuss the inevitable impact of personal relationships behind the music. Times have changed, and few jazz groups tour for more than a couple of consecutive weeks; still, hitting the road for even ...

Ludovico Granvassu's 2021 Sonic Delights

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's 2021 Sonic Delights" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Jazz is not a competitive sport and “Best Ofs" are misnomers. End of the year listicles have no bearing on the artistic standing of the albums they include, or on those they neglect, just like a five star review doesn't make the album it graces any better than it already is. But, apparently, humans ...

Size Matters: (Mostly New) Jazz for Big Bands and Orchestras, Part 1

Read "Size Matters: (Mostly New) Jazz for Big Bands and Orchestras, Part 1" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

More is not always necessarily better, especially in music. However, the proliferation of remarkable jazz big bands and orchestras of the last decade or so is providing plenty of material to prove that quality and quantity can go hand-in-hand. This week we focus on recent releases by some of the most compelling large ensembles around, the ...

Alban Darche: Le Gros Cube #2

Read "Le Gros Cube #2" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro
