MUSICIAN Born:

Deric Dickens

Deric Dickens is a Brooklyn-based percussionist and composer. After growing up in Southern Georgia, Deric worked as a band director, taught drum and bugle corps, and played as a principal timpanist with local orchestras and symphonies. But it was the ride cymbal, a friend had asked him to play at a session, that changed everything. Since, Dickens has toured and recorded with Robinella (Columbia Records) and JaLaLa (Janis Siegel Manhattan Transfer). Deric has performed numerous times with Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, Kirk Knuffke, and Jeff Lederer at various clubs and festivals including Birdland, 55 Bar, Bonnaroo, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Knoxville Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Festival, and The Muroran Jazz Festival Japan

Cataclysmic Commentary: Audience Participation

Read "Audience Participation" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Tenor saxophonist Ben Cohen and pianist Eli Wallace represent the current generation of adventurous improvising artists, although their prior releases to date have taken very different approaches to their craft. Over the last couple years Wallace has released records with percussionist Rob Pumpelly under the name of Dialectical Imagination--The Angel and the Brute Sing Songs of ...

Zero Point: Thoughts Become Matter

Read "Thoughts Become Matter" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Viriditas: Viriditas

Read "Viriditas" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Saxophonist Ben Cohen is currently based in Brooklyn, but it doesn't take long to figure out that he hails from elsewhere: rural Tennessee, to be exact. His rootsy, earthy tenor sound reveals a background as steeped in folk music and the blues as in avant-garde jazz, giving his voice an accessible edge that should serve him ...

The Dickens Campaign: Oh Lovely Appearance

Read "Oh Lovely Appearance" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

New York-based drummer Deric Dickens' southern roots and inspirations derived from legendary music archivist Alan Lomax morph into an Americana-dappled spectrum of modern jazz on this delightful trio date. The bass-less program summons a capacious platform, as the artists' rural and bluesy twists underscore the modern jazz vernacular. Lomax zigzagged across America in the 1930s with ...

Memories in Motian

Read "Memories in Motian" reviewed by Zeno De Rossi

Soon after hearing about Paul Motian's passing (November 22, 2011) I felt the urge to delve (again) into his music. Later on, inspired by a moving writing by Ellery Eskelin (published on his website and reproduced below, by his kind permission), I thought it would have been interesting to collect brief memories from ...
