Mark Mondesir
Born:
Immersed in music before birth but discovered the drums at 12 years old by fluke. Took it seriously at 16. Largely self taught by listening to records & tapes & watching drummers. After years of playing more groove orientated music(Prog Rock, Funk & Fusion) I focused on learning about Jazz after attending the Weekend Arts Centre Workshops run by Ian Carr. This is where I met Julian Joseph, who in turn, introduced me to Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson etc. We would meet after the workshop to conduct our own jam sessions honing our "jazz chops." This led to playing jams at the Atlantic pub in Brixton with courtney at a time when the media started to pay attention to him

The bi-annual Young Jazz Musician competition was launched by Britain's public service broadcaster, the BBC, in 2014. The final was televised on November 22 and the ...

Ever since guitarist John McLaughlin formed the 4th Dimension--his first electric fusion band in a decade--fans have been hoping he'd dig a little further into his back catalog. Death, Rebirth & New Revolution
by Ian Patterson
The death knell has often been sounded for jazz and many would argue that the last revolution in jazz took place as the '60s handed the baton to the '70s, with the electronic-influenced jazz typified by trumpeter Miles Davis' ground breaking albums In a Silent Way (Columbia, 1969) and Bitches Brew (Columbia, 1970). Many believe that ...
Buddy Rich: In a Zone of His Own

One of the channels that came with my Dish Network package is Classic Arts Showcase, which is a treasure trove of film clips documenting classical, ballet, folk, pop and other forms of music that one is unlikely to see anywhere else (although some footage is presumably available on YouTube, which more and more seems to encompass ...
John McLaughlin: Risk, Magic And Mystery

Shortly after completing a successful European tour with the 4th Dimension, guitarist John McLaughlin has some time to put his well-traveled feet up at his home in Monaco and reflect on the evolution of this band, its second CD, Now Here This (Abstract Logix, 2012), and the mysteries of live performance. Yet, just two days before ...
John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension: Now Here This
by Ian Patterson
Guitarist John McLaughlin and his 4th Dimension group's studio debut, To The One (Abstract Logix, 2010), mined the past for inspiration. The spirit of saxophonist John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (Impulse!, 1965) drove McLaughlin's most charged electric playing in years, proving he'd lost none of his fire. Two years on, and McLaughlin's 4th Dimension returns another ...
