Rob Garcia: Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet

Read "Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet" reviewed by Luigi Sforza

Kurt Elling With The Keith Ganz Trio
Jazz Standard
New York, NY
July 31, 2016

If there's any genre of music that's truly built on the idea of spur-of-the-moment change, it's jazz. And so, in that very spirit, we had this performance.

The audience that came down to hear ...

Mike Holober: Balancing Act

Read "Balancing Act" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

It's hard enough to find a drummer, much less one who sings. There is Les DeMerle, and he is fine, but, the drummer/singer is a pretty hard chair to fill, ...

Sari Kessler: Do Right

Read "Do Right" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

In just under five minutes--the running time for producer/percussionist James Shipp's album-opening arrangement of “Walk On By"--Sari Kessler successfully makes the case that jazz singing is her real métier. That particular truth may not have materialized until recent times, as Kessler walked away from a career as a clinical psychologist to pursue a life in music ...

Rob Garcia: Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet

Read "Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet" reviewed by Franz A. Matzner

A complex amalgam, drummer-composer Rob Garcia's Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planetis as densely constructed and provoking as its title. Despite the socially conscious themes that its track titles, lyrics, and multi-layered musical journeys explore, Garcia has made clear this is not a protest album. At least not in the typical sense.

Mike Holober: Balancing Act

Read "Balancing Act" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Pianist/composer Mike Holober has had an active career with big bands (including HR Big Band Frankfurt, WDR Big Band Cologne, Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, and the Westchester Jazz Orchestra in the U.S.). So he brings a refined approach to the composing and arranging on this octet recording. He set himself an ambitious goal: to feature a vocalist, ...
