Born:

Guitarist Mike Baggetta is one of his generation’s most original jazz improvisors and composers. It has been said that his performances are "totally compelling" (Jazz Journal - UK), "his melodic sense is truly beautiful" (Jazzreview.com) and that "each piece he performs creates new worlds of possibilities" (The Hartford Courant). Mike Baggetta recently received an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award for his compositional talent, and has also released the second album of his works for the Mike Baggetta Quartet, Source Material, on the Fresh Sound New Talent label. Alex Sadnik: Flight

Read "Flight" reviewed by Jeff Schwartz

What is new to say through Charlie Parker's music? On Flight Alex Sadnik looks for answers with two different bands. On the first side of the LP, his alto fronts a quintet with violin, pedal steel guitar, bass, and drums, but this is not a Bob Wills or Bill Frisell pastiche. The opening track, ...

Read "Mark F. Turner's Best Releases of 2016" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Another year of outstanding releases which not only unveiled new artists but also fresh material from those I've admired over many years. While the roots of jazz were formed during the music diaspora from Africa to America its branches are continually grafting and evolving--artistically, culturally, and geographically as musicians and composers find creative ways to express ...

Mike Baggetta: Spectre

Read "Spectre" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Mike Baggetta has produced a number of quality recordings over the years yet Spectre may be his most compelling project to date. The guitarist delves into some “live" sound processing which include an array of delicate textures, sampling and loops undoubtedly influenced by ECM recording artist David Torn who mastered this release. Though ...
