Beats & Pieces Big Band

Active since:

Beats & Pieces is not your average big band, rather a band that's big. These 14 musicians have been playing together for over ten years and have become a tight knit bunch, open to a huge diversity of music. The influence of artists such as Björk, Radiohead, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Loose Tubes, Gil Evans and Kenny Wheeler pop up in their performances and the compositions of bandleader and conductor {{m: Ben Cottrell = 47568}}.. The band tours regularly across the UK, Europe and further afield, marking their 10th anniversary in 2018 with their debut North American tour and inclusion in the Downbeat Critics Poll in the category Rising Star Big Band. To date they have released 2 studio albums - 'Big Ideas' (2012) and 'All In' (2015) - and a 10th anniversary live CD/DVD entitled 'ten' (2018), all on Manchester independent label Efpi Records.

Let Spin: Steal The Light

Read "Steal The Light" reviewed by Chris May

Formed in 2014, London's Let Spin is an electric quartet peopled by musicians who emerged around a decade earlier as part of a scene which was rather lazily dubbed “punk jazz" by British music journalists. The music was certainly loud, irreverent and in-your-face, but it was played by musicians who were conservatoire graduates, a demographic not ...

A rugged modal-based spiritual-jazz blowing session from the trumpeter Nick Walters, who has one foot in the underground London scene which is shaking up British jazz, and another in his home city, Manchester. Reykjavik Jazz Festival Reykjavik, Iceland September 5-9, 2018 Iceland has produced, and continues to produce, many outstanding artists--some of them world-famous, such as Björk, Múm, Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds, Gus Gus, Emiliana Torrini, Of Monsters and Men--which is quite remarkable if one thinks that the country has less than 350,000 inhabitants. 130,000 ...

Beats and Pieces Big Band: All In

Read "Beats and Pieces Big Band: All In" reviewed by Phil Barnes

The idea of the gang is well established in rock bands--think of the wonderful Astrid Kirchherr photos of the Beatles in their Hamburg-era leathers, the Specials glowering from the cover of their classic debut LP or the Clash in pretty much any picture ever taken of them. Rock bands often foster this “us v's them" mentality ...
