Award winning jazz baritone saxophonist and multi instrumentalist

About Me

DownBeat award winning Karl Stabnau is hailed as a “highly versatile and valuable musician...well versed in the tradition and future of the music.”Performing on the baritone saxophone, he has made a name for himself as a both a leader and a sideman having toured nationally with his own groups as well as internationally with the Grammy winning “Gil Evans Centennial Project.”

Karl has been a featured artist at jazz festivals across the United States and in Italy and has appeared as a sideman with The Gil Evans Centennial Project, Dqayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, Tia Brazda, Lou Christie and Bobby Rydell. He has played in concert with greats such as Marvin Stamm, Gary Foster, Jeff Beal, Dave Glasser, Dick Oatts, Pat LaBarbera, Adam Niewood, Lew Soloff, and Chuck Mangione.

His education includes a Bachelor of Jazz Performance and Master's of Music Education degree from the renowned Eastman School of Music as well as a Master's of Music Business degree from Syracuse University. He has studied with Ray Ricker, Walt Weiskopf, Jose Encarnacion and Chien-Kwan Lin, Bruce Johnstone and Joe Temperley.

Besides being recognized as a “gifted improviser” on alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, Karl is also in demand as a woodwind specialist performing on flute, clarinet and bass clarinet. He maintains an active teaching studio, serves on faculty at SUNY Brockport College as director of jazz ensembles and music business, and teaches saxophone and improvisation at the Birch Creek Summer Jazz Camp. www.karlstabnau.com
