Michael Fibonacci

About Me

Michael Fibonacci studied piano, composition and electronic music at Goldsmiths College and played piano and keyboard in various 70s bands, including Tidal Wave, a punk influenced rock group.

In the 80s Fibonacci moved into jazz and jazz/funk, writing songs and music and playing keyboard with bands such as Mr. Clean, and his own bands, Alchemy and Modern Times. He had residencies in a number of London clubs and also worked as a session musician.

He especially loves and admires such jazz pianists as Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans,Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul

Fibonacci has written music for films and documentaries and for radio advertising. He has written numerous songs and worked with singers, promoting them for record companies.

In the early 90s Fibonacci formed his own record label, World Music Ltd., to espouse his philosophy of the role of music. At this period he became aware of, on the one hand the wider diversity of music from. On the other hand in contrast to pure ethnic traditional music, he saw the possibilities of cross cultural influences creating a way of breaking down barriers between people and cultures through different musical forms, e.g. Afro-Cuban, indo-jazz, street soul.

At this time he composed Lulabali(World Music Ltd.)., a Balinese-influenced work, which was issued on cassette. Lulabali was taken up and played regularly on Radio Bali. At the same time he worked with jazz saxophonist Lyn Dobson (ex-Soft Machine). The recording of these sessions is now available as an album called Sacred Journey (World Music Ltd.). He composed a major classical work, Voyage (World Music Ltd.) based on the myth of Odysseus, issued on CD and cassette. Voyage sold 200,000 copies.

He composed, arranged and produced commercial music for various artists under the World Music label, and collaborated with Conscious Records on various projects, which included working with R&B singer Courtney Buchanan. He produced the record Retribution by Patchwerk Man, a global trance 12” dance track, which was followed by remixes by DJ Evolution, DJ Eamonn Dogg and DJ Luke Pepper.

Since 2000 he has focussed on the Indian Raga form to develop his world music ideas, which include Piano Meditations (World Music Ltd.), Raga Moon (World Music Ltd.) featuring the singer Rena, and Raga Dreams (World Music Ltd.), an instrumental album with David Lawrence. He also recorded a piano album Schooldays (World Music Ltd.) which was influenced by Keith Jarrett. In 2006 he produced the band Parantos, Songs from Indonesia (World Music Ltd.), recorded in Bali, and also recorded an outstanding pianist in Bali, Dodot, who was inspired by Bill Evans. The resulting album is, Piano Dreams (World Music Ltd.).
