Mike Baker

A bit of jazz, blues, and classical blended together

About Me

Born on the west coast, grew up in the south, schooled on the east coast and the north. I haven't been everywhere but it's on my list. No matter where I travel be it for work or pleasure, I always seek out jazz performances. Admittedly, some are better than others but the geographical location seems to have little bearing on the quality of the music, only the quantity. Some lament jazz is dying. I disagree. Hundreds of years ago people said the same of classical music. Jazz is America's modern day classical music, in my opinion.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because...it requires great facility to play it well. I admire, respect, and appreciate the musicianship of accomplished performers. I was first exposed to jazz...in high school. My school's band program had a Christmas concert. I was trying to win favor with a girl in the band so I reluctantly attended the concert. They had a jazz band segment during the concert. I was impressed by the power and the sound of the band. I learned to appreciate swing and I became enamored. The girl and I never worked out but my love for jazz was born so it wasn't really a loss at all. I met Jaco Pastorius...he took the time to talk to me after a concert. He was very warm, sincere, and tolerant of an adoring fan. The best show I ever attended was...Count Basie and his Orchestra. The first jazz record I bought was...Conquistador by the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. My advice to new listeners...have an open mind. Listen to new stuff at least three times before deciding if you like it or not. Or whatever else you have in mind.
