Richard T Bell
Jazz lover and photographer since I was a teen... quite some time ago now...
As a student in high school I became very interested in
photography, science and jazz
music. The transition was through rock, Frank Zappa and The
Mothers of Invention,
Fusion, Miles and then on to Coltrane. Spending much of my spare
time and money
catching acts at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, I was fortunate
enough to have seen
and heard many of the greats that came through the Los Angeles
clubs in the early to
mid 70's. Often while catching the show, I'd bring along my quiet
rangefinder loaded with Tri-X. Shooting natural light only as to
not disturb the
performance, I was able to capture a few of the beautiful scenes
that lay before me
during those formative years. Since then, I've had the good
fortune to have made a living
as a photographer in the Sciences while continuing to shoot jazz
on the side as a hobby.
Over the years, I've built up a fairly substantial catalog of
images that I've just recently
began to reveal and share. Allabout jazz seemed a perfect venue to
share some of the
informal photos taken over the years. I hope to add more as time
passes. It would be a
shame to have these images end up in the trash when I'm gone and
it would give me
great joy to share some of the images with fellow jazz enthusiasts
My Jazz Story
Since I'm a great lover of jazz and I've been taking photos of jazz musicians on and off for many years, I thought it about time that I share some of my images. I have many many images that hopefully others will enjoy. This is a great site in that it allows those of us who love jazz and photography to share our work!
I'm starting with just a couple of photos and will be adding more as I have time.
