About Me

Vitor Pereira was born in 1979 in Porto/Portugal A late starter, he first picked up a guitar at the age of 16 and soon after was getting involved with local school rock bands. The taste of being part of a band and the excitement of the first performances proved to be a crucial experience which ultimately led him to the decision of becoming a professional musician. The only official academic field of music available in Portugal at the time was in classical music so Vitor started studying classical music graduating in classical guitar in 2003 from “Academia de música Silva Monteiro”. This classical music experience has been quite important in influencing the music he does today, not so much the classical guitar aspect but definitely all the composition and arranging classes he had then. Whilst studying classical music, he also developed an interest in Jazz which led him to participate in several workshops, private lessons and seminars around Europe with names like: Pat Metheny, Jonathan Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman, Aaron Goldberg, Matt Penman, etc… In 2004 he moved to London to study at Middlesex University where he finished a BA hons in Jazz under the tuition of Stuart Hall, Mike Outram, Chris Batchelor and Nikki Illes. Resident in London since then, Vitor has been an active musician in the UK, Portugal and Europe, playing alongside musicians such as James Allsopp, Marc Demuth, George Crowley, Andre Canniere, Binker Goldings or Asaf Sirkis to name a few. As a leader he formed the “Vitor Pereira Quintet” which became his main platform write his own music and explore an artistic identity. With this band Vitor published two albums “Doors” in 2011 and “New World” in 2016 triggering excellent reviews and recognition from the international jazz community as well as extensive radio play, interviews and performances all over the UK and Portugal with special notoriety for the opening of “PortaJazz festival” in Porto 2016. Their third album “Somewhere in the Middle” is now due to be released in December 2018.
