Tony Whyton

Tony is the author of Beyond A Love Supreme.

About Me

My work deals specifically with jazz, music and culture. In addition to working as Project Leader for Rhythm Changes, I’m currently working on my 2nd book, Beyond A Love Supreme, a cross disciplinary study of the musical and cultural influence of John Coltrane’s seminal album.  My first book, Jazz Icons: Heroes, Myths and the Jazz Tradition, was published by Cambridge University Press in March this year.

Since joining the University of Salford in 2007, I’ve devised and created two acclaimed international conferences, 'New Jazz Histories' in 2008 and 'Mediating Jazz' in 2009, the latter featuring delegates from over 13 countries, including researchers, broadcasters and industry specialists.  Last year, I established the Jazz Research Study Group--the only group of its kind in the UK--in partnership with Nick Gebhardt at Lancaster University.

I am a Professor in the School of Media, Music and Performance and also co-edit the internationally peer-reviewed Jazz Research Journal.
