My Jazz Story

Published on: 2016-12-17

I love jazz because it actually pays the rent (something many have told me is impossible). I was first exposed to jazz by my father (a B3 player) I met Eddie Bo and Max Roach. Was lucky enough to hang out with Eddie for a time. He taught me the true New Orleans Style Piano Left Hand. It cannot be notated. The best show I ever attended was Cassandra Wilson NOLA JazzFest in 1999, Count Basie Orchestra (my first jazz concert at age 13 with my Dad), so many Astral Project shows at Snug Harbor/Funky Butt, Cecil Taylor, Brubeck, so many more... the most FUN show would always end up being Kermit Ruffins with ReBirth Brass Band as a very close second (if not tied with Kermit). The first jazz record I bought was Cannonball & Coltrane (it has since been retitled Something Else). My advice to new listeners is always rediscover.
