My Jazz Story

I love jazz because...In it's highest form, it touches my heart and soul and has the ability to cross all boundaries and connect us humans in a most profound way. I was first exposed to jazz... as a child, I am grateful to Barry Gordy and the movie and soundtrack of Lady Sings the blues for introducing my ears and heart to jazz. I met [musician name]...vocalists Karrin Allyson, Rebecca Parris, ( now deceased) and Kate Mcgarry. They all are inspirations to me as unique and beautiful ladies of song and as human beings. The best show I ever attended was...it is hard to say but I have fond memories of seeing Micheal Franks at Humphry's by the bay in San Diego under the stars and many memories being up close at numerous shows at the former Jazz landmark Steamers Jazz Club and Cafe ( Fullerton, CA) the Jeff Hamilton trio, Rebecca Parris and Karrin Allyson were among my favorites. The first jazz record I bought was... My older sister actually bought the soundtrack to Lady Sings the Blues and I can't remember the first jazz album I bought...but I was given a cassette tape of Billie Holiday with Teddie Wilson and his Orchestra by the first jazz pianist that heard me sing. What a gift! it is one of my favorites and has had a huge influence on my singing style. My advice to new listeners... listen with your heart, mind and soul but mostly your heart and soul!

My House Concert Story

My husband and I created a house concert venue we call "Salon de Jazz" in Central Los Angeles. We set up the living room of our craftsman home, ( which happens to be a great listening room), with our collection of French Art Deco Antiques and Objet de Charme to create the feeling of an old fashioned salon. We host creative gatherings such as intimate concerts and jazz singing workshops. Our roster and educators have included the Grammy nominated duo; vocalist Kate Mcgarry and guitarist Keith Ganz, International touring and recording artist and guitarist Mitchell Long, rising star pianist composer and arranger Josh Nelson and L.A. based "voice guru" Sara Leib, vocalist, educator and creator of the critically acclaimed vocal warm up exercise app voxercise. Our mission is to create environments where the art of live music is celebrated as an experience rather than a product while creating inspiration and synergy between artists, audiences and educators. My most memorable and enjoyable concerts have been in warm, intimate and unique settings and I love creating these experiences for others!
