Michael Delceg
Director, Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, and Tahuna Blue, a quintet + guests.
About Me
Mike Delceg grew up in the New York City region and saw many of the greats like Coltrane
and Monk in places like Birdland and the Village Vanguard. While attending Rutgers
University he played in various jazz and rock groups and participated in research for the
Institute of Jazz Studies housed there. In his playing he tries to carry on a bit of that
tradition.
In New Zealand Mike has played for with Chris Fox's New Horizons band in Wellington and
at national festivals with that big band and various small groups before moving to Nelson.
In Nelson Mike has played for many years with the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band and various
small groups. He has also given private lessons and played in pit bands for many local
productions including West Side Story, Chicago, Me and My Girl and others, playing
everything from bass clarinet to soprano sax. While in Golden Bay he has held the first
flute chair in the orchestra and continues to play a variety of woodwinds as needed. He
has also participated in school music programmes and the Nelson Saxophone Quartet.
Currently Mike directs the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band and manages the Bay Horns as a
wind and brass extension group for larger gigs and plays flute and saxes in the
Moonlighters and Tahuna Blue.
