My Jazz Story

I love jazz because...Its a music that just gets me in the head and heart. It has a form that is never boring and the constant rhythm, cord and tempo changes is like no other music. It's a life long journey of learning that I will never get to the end of thankfully. I taught myself to know all styles from New Orleans to free and avant garde and I can get as much enjoyment from either (as long as it's played well!) I was first exposed to jazz...By my dad's record collection from as soon as I was capable of placing a disc on the turntable and dropping the needle. My old man would freak out seeing his 4 year old handling his jazz albums! His collection gave me a great grounding: Ellington, Basie, Ted Heath (UK big band, Louis Armstrong, Ella. Then on to Oscar, George Shearing, Brubeck, Jacques Loussier and Cleo Laine. My own listening took me through Be-Bop to Monk who was my pathfinder. My bridge to all new music to follow, without Monk I would have found it difficult~ if not impossible to hear free jazz. I met [musician name]...many, many. All top UK players via my own promotions + Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley & Steve Swallow, David Murray, George Russell, George Shearing, Joey Calderazzo, Wayne Krantz, Egberto Gismonti, Tal Farlow, Mundell Lowe, Jim Pepper, most recently Tim Armacost, Dave Berkmann, Gene Jackson, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Warfield, Walter Smith, Mark Turner, Will Vinson... The best show I ever attended was...Dave Holland Quartet (Ronnie Scott's 1990) still stands out but many more since. The first jazz record I bought was...Tubby Hayes, Mexican green My advice to new listeners...Start with something you're at ease with and keep listening to progress. Always promise yourself to have open ears and an open mind, and you will find the way.
