Kevin Brow

About Me

Kevin Brow is a unique and consequent drummer and composer with a foundation in jazz yet a persevering goal to explore and stretch musical boundaries to create an advanced and accessible modern acoustic music. He has toured and played festivals in Europe, Canada and USA with his own group Koptor and as a sideman with outstanding musicians such as Pete Robbins, Mikkel Ploug, Loren Stillman, Phil Dwyer, Peter Rosendal, Peter Vanhuffel and the band goo. He holds a bachelor of music degree from the University of Toronto and an Advanced Performance Diploma from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen as was also awarded a substantial study grant for further studies in New York (2005) from the Canada Council for the Arts. Oringinally from Canada, Brow is now living in Copenhagen where he has been since 2006. He has recently been noted as; ‘one of the strongest rhythm section players that Danish jazz scene has to offer’ (Danish jazz journalist Jakob Bækgaard).

As a drummer Brow is dedicated to furthering a melodic approach to drumming while still maintaining a deep groove. His main focus is playing in small groups where his advanced sense of melody, groove and composition has proven him as a unique new drumming voice. “An accomplished technician yet one with heart and fire....an outstanding melodic gift on the kit.” (All about jazz, New York).

As a composer Brow leads his group Koptor, which released their debut album on Fresh Sound New Talent records in 2008 with very positive reviews both in Europe and North America. He has just recently recorded Koptor's second album (to be released autumn 2010) which features Denmark’s most inovative jazz musicians Jacob Anderskov and Lotte Anker. He has also recently recorded a new duo/solo concept album of 13 original duo and solo compositions which features Brow in different duo settings as well as his debut playing solo and as a conductor for his own duo compositions for sax/bass and cello/viola. Expecting release in autumn 2010 this is Brow’s most ambitious project to date and features renowned musicians from Denmark, USA and Canada such as Marc Ducret, Jacob Anderskov, Lotte Anker, Tim Berne, Jacob Sacks, Rob Mosher, Mikkel Ploug, Eivind Opsvik, Kasper Tranberg, Dan Weiss and others.

Originally born (1979) and raised in Orangeville Ontario Canada, Brow began playing piano at age 10 and later switched to drums at age 12. He first started piano and drums at the Ontario Conservatory of Music. He later (1998) moved to Toronto where he played music extensively in Toronto for 7 years before receiving a coveted study grant from the Canada Council for the arts to live and study in New York for one year where he studied drums and composition with Dan Weiss and John Hollenbeck. Not yet feeling yet he had found his home and still feeling the need to search out new musicians and cultures Brow moved to Copenhagen in 2006 where he has lived permanently since. In Copenhagen Brow is active performing and composing music for several side projects and his own projects. He is also an enthusiastic educator dedicated to furthering the youth’s musical development. He has also become the first North American to graduate from the Advanced Performance Diploma program at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
