About Me

My name is Eugene Portman and I'm a professional jazz pianist performing throughout the UK both as a soloist and as an ensemble player. My introduction to jazz happened when I heard Oscar Peterson at the tender age of Thirteen. From then on jazz has been a passion of mine. My influences all the great jazz pianists of yesteryear such as Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Teddy Wilson, Monty Alexander and George Shearing to name a few. I am no modernist as you can tell by the pianists who have influenced me. I like a good tune and I like melodic playing. My style of playing is quite easy to listen to and accessible by most people even if they are not jazz fans.

The first jazz record I bought was Erroll Garner's "Concert by the Sea".
