Herbert Harris

About Me

Tenor saxophonist Herb Harris was born in Wash. DC July 8, 1968. He began his musical journey on clarinet at age 12. He switched to alto saxophone at 15 and tenor sax at 17. His interest in jazz peaked when he heard a recording of John Coltrane's GIANT STEPS. Early on, He admired the sound & style of Dexter Gordon. Other influences in- clude Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, and Charlie Parker. Harris has toured and recorded with Marcus Roberts(Deep in The Shed)RCA/Novus, Wynton Marsalis(Tune In Tomorrow)Columbia. Harris was a member of the group of saxist dubbed the TOUGH YOUNG TENORS on the album (Alone To- gether)Island/Antilles-which reached #5 on Billboard's jazz chart. Mr Harris was a member of the second edition of the Jazz Futures which toured the States and Europe in the summer of 1992 and has recorded with Wycliffe Gordon(What You Dealin' With)Criss Cross,and Philip Harper(13th Moon)Muse. Mr. Harris resides in the Bronx, N.Y.
