About Me
Kevin Stevenson: Drummer, Composer, Producer
Kevin was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His earliest musical influences were jazz greats like John Coltrane, Miles Davis,
Count
Basie and Nat King Cole. At a young age, Kevin took drum lessons from his uncle, Leon Stevenson and played clarinet
in
junior high. I remember as a kid watching my uncle perform as I stood watching from outside the club. He sat up in
the
window and he would look at me and smile while playing. Man! It was right then and there I knew I wanted to play
the
drums. In college, Kevin pursued music while attending the University of Cincinnati. Later, while playing locally in
Cleveland, he decided to relocate to New York City in May of 1979. It was here that Kevin began to study with master
drummers Michael Carvin and Jim Payne. He has worked with trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, South African musician
Tony
Cedras, actor Mario VanPeebles, gospel singer Alvin Slaughter, Mark Ledford, The Black Rock Coalition Orchestra
w/guitarist Vernon Reid, Me'Shell N'degeocello, Bill White, Michael Osborn, Arturo O'Farrill, Lafayette Harris, bassist
Dave
Anderson, various Broadway and off-Broadway productions and the multi-Grammy winning Brooklyn Tabernacle
Choir.
In addition, Kevin has recorded and composed music for television and film. He has shared the stage with Marion
Meadows, Phil Perry, Pieces of a Dream, Bobby Sanabria, Stephanie Mills, the O'Jays and Take 6.
