Cathy Segal-Garcia

"In Control: Jazz singer Cathy Segal-Garcia's style leans toward heavily melodic vehicles that show off her flowing, at-ease, rhythmic sense...A voice that's soft and warm as cashmere."

About Me

I'm from Boston, but left there in search of a bigger city in '75. SF was too small, so I landed in L.A. Went to Berklee for arranging & flute. I've recorded 5 projects, standards and originals... classic and modern and what I call alternative jazz. I've performed consistently and taught voice and related subjects for many years. I've traveled through Europe and many years in Japan, performing and teaching. I love to create events that everyone benefits from. I'm known as a musician's singer. I love writing too.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because...it's intricate yet subtle study is a total reflection of life~ I was first exposed to jazz...when i was born! Dad was a jazz tenor player, mom a singer, older twin sisters singers. But Dad lead me to jazz big time! The first jazz record I bought was...The Modern Jazz Quartet. My advice to new listeners...Sit down and really listen to something that you like. Really listen. Listen to each instrument separately, all the way through the song. Then you'll understand more of what each one is doing!

My House Concert Story

I've curated jazz series, in venues and house concerts. I love both! I have a special house concert situation that holds about 60 people, has great instruments, and a great vibe. I've performed there, others include: Otmaro Ruiz, Bob Sheppard, Larry Koonse, Josh Nelson, Madeline Eastman, Rosana Eckert, Ingrid James, Fish To Birds, Sunny Wilkinson, Jackie Ryan, Jon Mayer, Kristin Korb, and many more...
