About Me
Alex Sill is one of those rare talented individuals that has all the elements in place, and at
the age of 22! (?). He’s embraced the Jazz idiom and his fingers dance through it effortlessly
while his inspired inner ear guides him through new melodic discoveries. He has a wonderful
command of the compositional tools necessary to recognize his inner musical inspirations
and make them real in the world in beautiful and generous expressions while still honoring
the melody. It’s nice to see a young person have such a passion for this style of music. He is
one of the vital players that has the potential to raise the Jazz bar.- Steve Vai
Alex Sill is one of the new lions emerging into the virtuoso group of young players. He's a
guitarist who's destined to be in the front line. His talent on his instrument is phenomenal,
and his dedication & hard work to master it began at a young age, and has never faltered. He
has absorbed the cultural history of the guitar, and will obviously be a cutting edge
contributor to the continued evolution of this axe. His solo playing shows his maturity, way
beyond his age. And maybe most important, we can hear how much he loves what he's
playing. A musical slam dunk. -Dave Grusin (Grammy Award Winning Film Composer & Jazz
Pianist)
Los Angeles based Guitarist/Composer Alex Sill has performed and/or studied with some of
the world's top musicians including Lyle Mays, Larry Koonse, Steve Vai, Lee Ritenour, Charlie
Haden, Sonny Emory, Melvin Lee Davis, Joe Labarbera, Darek Oles, and Vardan Ovsepian.
Alex has been playing music since age 12, and recently received a Bachelor of Fine
Arts Degree in the Jazz Program at California Institute of the Arts (Minor in Music Theory).
Alex's band The Trifield Quartet (smaller version of the Trifield Guitar Project), is one of the
leading young jazz bands in Los Angeles.
As a composer, Alex has written music for a variety of different contexts including film
music, jazz groups, rock bands, and a guitar trio. His piece Montana Suite, written for three
guitars was performed, and premiered during an opening set for Robben Ford at the Crown
of the Continent Guitar Festival in Bigfork, Montana in August of 2013. Other performers at
the festival included Pat Metheny and Lee Ritenour. “Montana Suite,” is part of an album of
the same name, which is now available on iTunes, Amazon, and other major outlets for
purchase.
For recent performances, Alex has focused on including projected imagery to go along with
the live music. Here's an excerpt from a recent sow program describing what's behind this:
Our experiences are not simply the tangible events that occur outside of our selves, but are
in fact a synthesis of the physical events, and what our psyche contributes to them. Often
times, the deeper, 'unconscious' parts of our selves communicate with us in the form of
images. But these images are often packed with deep implications, though one might not pay
attention to them. These charged images can be related to our personal experience, but our
unconscious is relating to them in a primal, collective way. The emotional material released
along with the imagery is stemming from deep, human behavior patterns that Carl Jung
called Archetypes. Music is not only a part of, but strongly encourages this archetypal
behavior.
An example of the music and imagery in a live performance context can be seen here:
