About Me

André Enceneat has performed professionally for over 30 years, singing everything from grand opera to big band swing to vocal jazz. As a classical performer in his youth, he has performed roles with the Syracuse Opera Company and Washington Savoyards, and has sung with the Syracuse Oratorio Society and Master Chorale of Washington. André started singing vocal jazz in the metro DC area in 1996 with a group called DC Express. Since 2005, Andre has sung with a number of big bands and jazz combos in the DC area. In 2006, André was a finalist in the DC International Vocal Jazz Competition, competing with 147 vocalists around the world. He was the front man with the Tom Cunningham Orchestra, a venerable DC favorite and award-winning 20-piece big band, for 7 years. During his tenure, André was nominated three times for a WAMMIE Award as Best Big Band Jazz Vocalist. André is features on Tom Cunningham’s 2010 Cd Singin’ and Swingin’. Andre has sung back up for both George Benson and Ben Folds while they performed with the National Symphony Orchestra. A dedicated music educator, André has taught vocal and general music in Maryland's Montgomery County Public Schools since 2000. From his private studio, he teaches private lessons in voice, microphone technique, and music theory. André currently sings with the vocal jazz group Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet. This group has sung internationally for decades, and is currently recording a Cd called Vocal Madness with the great Richie Cole.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it is such a part of me what I have become. I was first exposed to jazz by my grandparents. I met Jon Faddis, Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, George Benson, and Chris Vadala. The first jazz record I bought was Chuck Mangione's Feels So Good. My advice to new listeners listen to a much of the great musicians as you can, both vocalists and instrumentalists.
